outlook.com
In an official blog post today, Microsoft has revealed that those who enjoy using more than one email address linked to Outlook.com will no longer be able to do so. Starting late July, Microsoft will stop supporting linked email accounts and allow users to use aliases instead. "There are a number of people who have more than one email address and want to manage these multiple email addresses from Outlook.com. Linked accounts were introduced in 2006 as a way to quickly switch between different accounts each with their own email address. Over the next couple months, we will stop supporting linked accounts and instead help people move to a more robust and secure way of managing multiple email addresses: aliases," Microsoft stated in an official blog post. The primary reason Microsoft is discontinuing linked email accounts for Outlook.com is due to security. While linked accounts in Outlook.com allow you to easily switch to another email account without entering

Project Loon by Google PDF Print E-mail

project loon
About two thirds of the people on the planet don’t have access to the internet. Plenty of people have ideas about how to change that — it’s cheaper to build 3G cellular towers in some parts of the world than to lay new cable or telephone wires, for instance. But Google has another idea: Balloons. The company is starting a pilot project that involves sending a fleet of balloons about 12 miles up, and using them to beam internet signals to the ground. They’re calling it Project Loon. Google says the result is a network that provides 3G-like speeds to areas that would otherwise be hard to reach. All you need on the ground is a special antenna attached to your building that lets you connect to the the balloon network. Getting things to work in the air is a bit more complex. The balloons will move through the air, so Google has to move them up and down through different air streams to control their movement in order to offer continuous internet access on the ground...Learn more about this incredible project, watch a brief video, or go in-depth at windows9newsinfo forum.

Android malware
IT pros in the enterprise rely on a wide array of tools needed to keep users secure: firewalls, intrusion detection systems, centralized software updates, anti-malware definition updates, policy statements, and so on. But when it comes to mobile security, quite often many businesses do not hold the same strict policies as they do for desktops, despite the clear evidences that smartphones are now just as powerful as a full computer, and bad guys are out there targeting them. Just last week, security firm Kaspersky published a report about the most complex Android malware they have found so far. In many ways, it mimics what a modern desktop worm would have to do to infect computers. The first surprising finding is how many unknown vulnerabilities that this single malware was exploiting. Typically, most worms and viruses are created to exploit a single security hole. As soon as a Java or Flash exploit is found, for example, hackers go out and create code that

Kaspersky Whitelist PDF Print E-mail

Kaspersky Whitelist
Kaspersky recently announced their Whitelist Security Approach. It is a whole new concept to make the functioning of the antivirus program much faster and better. Whitelist is basically a database that stores information about different programs and files. You can check whether a file is safe or not by just simply entering its checksum or uploading the file itself. Once the information is stored on the global database, you don’t need to scan the files again and again, the antivirus program would automatically retrieve information from Whitelist database. You can be sure about your files before installing or taking the risk of running them. Whitelist is very helpful and informative. For a particular file, it can also tell you the Geographical Range (major areas of the world where it is ran). Other than the geographical range, it also tells you the number of daily, weekly and monthly users of that file. Because of such great features, Whitelist can also be used to record usage statistics

siri powered by bing.com
During WWDC today, Apple unveiled its newest mobile operating system iOS 7. Much to everyones surprise, Apple has ditched Google and has gone with Microsoft's Bing web search for its Siri personal assistant. "Starting this fall with iOS 7, Bing will power Siri's new integrated web search. When users ask Siri a question either the specific answer or web search links will now be delivered automatically so users can find information even faster," Microsoft stated in an official Bing blog post. Microsoft, of course, is happy to see its Bing search integrated with those who use Siri on the iPhone and iPad. As Microsoft puts it, Bing was designed to be a great place for web searching. The entire purpose of Bing is to help consumers quickly find what they are looking for and get more out of search. "We are thrilled that all the great results people have come to know and love on Bing.com will now be available to Siri users on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch," Microsoft adds...There's more from WWDC posted at windows8newsinfo forum.

Nokia Phablet
Sources hint that Nokia will pursue this strategy further with next wave of bigger screen phablets as well. So, the phablet destined for a September-October launch may come with camera module seen on Lumia 925 and with 5.5-6 inch screen, but next wave of phablets will bring higher megapixel numbers with humps and that 16-lens lytro style camera. So, what happens to that low-priced version of Lumia 920 mentioned as the fourth device in the report. Actually we have been tipped some details about it. Since, we say tipped so it is not from our sources but someone who claim to have seen it in person has revealed details about it. Adduplex stats reveal RM-955 with WXGA screen, which is not yet claimed by any Lumia 925 version, so may be this is the low-priced version of Lumia 920 already getting tested in China. This may have some basis. For one, low-priced Lumia 920 version is already mentioned by “FT” as coming then the specs tipped above looks really

Update for Windows 8 causes System File Checker to hang PDF Print E-mail

System File Checker
During the June 2013 Patch Tuesday, which took place June 11th, Microsoft rolled out a high-priority non-security update KB2821895 via Windows Update. This "servicing stack update" was available for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012. However, after installing the update, some users are experiencing some major resource consumption issues when it comes to the System File Checker. After installing the update and running the System File Checker, the process hangs at 100% CPU utilization while eating more RAM than necessary. This process eventually ends after roughly 30 minutes and states that it was "unable to fix problems" while generating a large CBS.log file that repeatedly states "Cannot repair member file." Microsoft has not addressed this issue just yet so we will have to resort to an alternative means to bypass this update since we cannot manually remove it...Read more + find the fix at windows8newsinfo forum.

Apple iOS 7 PDF Print E-mail

ios7
There's been a lot of talk about the visual and user experience changes in iOS 7, Apple's flagship mobile operating system that powers the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad products. Steven J Vaughn-Nichols refers to it as a "Mashup" of everyone else's mobile operating system, Android in particular. Our resident mobile software consultant Matthew Baxter-Reynolds believes this is an exercise of whether or not Apple should have "moved the cheese," and how much it is willing to risk alienating its end users with changes in order to advance its products. What is the common thread in all of this? Clearly, the nature of changing user interfaces and dealing with the issue of human-device interaction is not just an Apple problem. This is a problem that every single device manufacturer and software developer has to deal with now that we are moving into an age of ubiquitous computing. And it's not so much as a "post-PC" problem but a "Where do we go from here?"

How secure is the National Security Agency PDF Print E-mail

nsa
Many are concerned about the National Security Agency (NSA) collection of data on US companies and individuals and the very real possibility that it has a way of directly accessing the servers of the world's largest computing platforms: Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. It's certainly a situation that deserves attention and concern. But what's missing in this discussion is this: how secure is the NSA's spying system? If a foreign entity wanted to spy on US companies or individuals, would it try to tackle the problem directly by targeting the specific company or individual in its electronic spying attempts? It might, but that's a lot of work for an uncertain payoff. A much more efficient approach would be to hack into a surveillance system that already has access to the information. Far better to hack into the NSA spying system at Google, or at Facebook, or at Microsoft. The NSA also employs the world's top computer experts but it's not infallible. Everyone knows that there's no such

Modern UI Explained PDF Print E-mail

modern ui
The word ‘Metro’ was replaced by the term ‘Modern UI’ at the time of launch of Windows 8 in late 2012. However, Microsoft explains the term was never coined by it. It was ‘Modern UI’ for them earlier as is today. So, when actually did the word ‘Modern UI’ come into existence? Well, it all began with the transition of design in Windows Mobile to the flat tiled interface in Windows Phone 7, three years back. A brilliant community of designers then had brought a new line of thinking in the Windows Designer team, exhorting them to think differently about design and establish a Microsoft design ethos. It strongly believed products that feel immersive and responsive are compelling, delightful and bring the interface to life. It was this thinking that marked the era of transition in Windows Design history. Design was never in Microsoft’s DNA but Microsoft Windows today looks a lot more different. If the words of the designers are to be believed, it was not just design, a lot more

Windows 8 Overtakes Windows Vista
It has taken a fair while coming, but Windows 8 has finally overtaken Windows Vista in overall market share and is now the fourth most popular operating system in the world. This makes it the third overall when it comes to Windows versions exclusively. According to figures provided by market research firm StatCounter, Windows 8 is now installed on no less than 5.75 percent of computers worldwide. Windows Vista, on the other hand, now has a market share of 5.44 percent. Windows 7 continues to top the rankings with 55.39 percent, while Windows XP comes in second place and finds itself installed on 21.3 percent of computers the world over. Mac OS X remains the only non-Windows platform in the top five, with its market share of 7.51 percent. All said and done, this is indeed good news for Microsoft. Windows 8 has often been described as slow out of the blocks. And this actually led some circles to label its performance similar to Windows Vista, which remains Microsoft’s most disastrous operating system...Follow this and more on Windows 8 & Windows 8.1 at windows8newsinfo forum.
